Embracing the Future: Top Three Tech Trends for 2025 and the Year of AI Agents

Written by Rodney Hobbs

The technological landscape is evolving at an unprecedented pace, and this is not about to slow down anytime soon. Artificial intelligence continues to gain momentum and is fast becoming strategically critical to maintaining and gaining competitive advantage. Yet only a small group of high performers are leading the way in adoption of AI and harnessing its full potential. According to McKinsey1, AI adoption surged in 2024 to 72% after lagging for six years around 50% and this trend will create significant disruptive change as we move into 2025. To prevent being left behind, now is the time for organisations to evaluate their future readiness to embrace the emerging technological changes.

As the Chief Technology Officer, I am sharing the top three trends that will shape our future, with a special focus on business and AI transformation. This year, we are witnessing the dawn of “the year of agents,” where AI agents are set to revolutionise the way we work and interact with technology.

Agentic AI: The Rise of Autonomous Agents

Agentic AI refers to software programmes designed to independently make decisions and take actions to achieve specific goals. These agents combine various AI techniques with features like memory, planning, and environmental sensing to carry out tasks autonomously.

By 2028, it is predicted that at least 15% of day-to-day work decisions will be made autonomously through agentic AI, up from 0% in 2024. This shift will empower workers to manage more complex projects and automate customer experiences, ultimately increasing productivity across organisations.

Microsoft is at the forefront of this trend with its Azure OpenAI Service and Copilot, enabling businesses to leverage intelligent agents for enhanced decision-making and efficiency.

AI Governance Platforms: Ensuring Ethical and Responsible AI Use

As AI becomes more pervasive, the need for robust AI governance platforms is paramount. These platforms help manage and control AI systems, ensuring they are used responsibly and ethically. By 2028, enterprises using AI governance platforms will achieve 30% higher customer trust ratings and 25% better regulatory compliance scores than their competitors.

Microsoft provides comprehensive AI governance solutions through its Azure AI platform, which includes tools for monitoring, managing, and ensuring the ethical use of AI.

Hybrid Computing: Leveraging Multiple Technologies

Hybrid computing combines various technologies, such as CPUs, GPUs, edge devices, and quantum systems, to solve complex computational problems. This hybrid environment enables businesses to harness new technologies for disruptive impact. By 2030, 80% of humans will engage with smart robots on a daily basis, up from less than 10% today. Microsoft is at the forefront of hybrid computing with its Azure Hybrid and Multicloud solutions, providing seamless integration across different computing environments.

Potential Challenges with AI Adoption

While the benefits of AI are immense, there are several challenges that organisations may face during AI adoption:

  1. Data Privacy and Security: Ensuring the privacy and security of data is a significant concern. Organisations must implement robust data protection measures to safeguard sensitive information and comply with regulations.
  2. Ethical Considerations: The ethical use of AI is crucial to maintain trust and avoid biases. Companies need to establish clear guidelines and governance frameworks to ensure AI systems are used responsibly.
  3. Integration with Existing Systems: Integrating AI solutions with existing systems can be complex and time-consuming. It requires careful planning and coordination to ensure seamless integration and avoid disruptions.
  4. Skill Gaps: There is a growing demand for AI expertise, and organisations may face challenges in finding and retaining skilled professionals. Investing in training and upskilling the workforce is essential to bridge this gap.
  5. Change Management: Adopting AI technologies often requires significant changes in organisational processes and culture. Effective change management strategies are necessary to ensure smooth transitions and employee buy-in.

To drive business and AI transformation successfully in 2025, companies must embrace new and broader approaches for identifying value cases and building change and adoption processes. This involves:

  1. Identifying Value Cases: Companies need to systematically identify and prioritise AI use cases that align with their strategic goals. This requires a deep understanding of business processes and the potential impact of AI on these processes. By leveraging tools like Microsoft’s AI Business School, organisations can gain insights into how to identify and evaluate AI opportunities effectively.
  2. Building Change and Adoption Processes: Successful AI transformation requires more than just technology implementation. It involves creating a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. Companies must invest in training and upskilling their workforce to ensure they are equipped to work with AI technologies. Microsoft’s AI for Good initiative provides resources and support for organisations looking to build a sustainable AI adoption strategy.
  3. Embedding New Ways of Working: To achieve the desired business outcomes and productivity gains, companies must embed new ways of working into their organisational culture. This includes fostering collaboration across departments, encouraging experimentation, and continuously measuring and refining AI initiatives. Microsoft’s suite of collaboration tools, such as Microsoft Teams and Azure DevOps, can help organisations create an environment where AI-driven innovation thrives.

As we navigate these trends, it is clear that AI and business transformation will play a pivotal role in shaping our future. The year 2025 marks the beginning of “the year of agents,” where AI agents will drive significant advancements in productivity, efficiency, and innovation. Let’s embrace these changes and lead our organisations into a prosperous future.
